It's a known problem in Xfce4.3 that many menu and system icons are missing. To fix this, one can install x11-themes/tango-icon-theme or x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme, and the Xfce theme will know to inherit the icons from these themes.

I think x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme is a bit more complete.
